This past weekend Runwayaddicts debuted The Museum of Street Wear. This is my third time attending a Runwayaddicts event and I knew they would not disappoint.
Lead by Amanda Harth, Runwayaddicts (RWA) is a fashion media company created for independent and emerging fashion designers.ย I have learned so much from this amazing group of people and I love that they provide so much support and opportunities for people like me. It was good to see a lot a familiar faces and I felt like I was a part of their amazing community.
The Museum of Street Wear was a two-day event held at Lab on Lake, which is a huge venue used for events like this one. I was able to attend the Saturday session which was packed with people eager to learn and to see what RWA had created for the public to see. The event started off with a very detailed panel discussion dedicated to the fashion industry. The panel was lead by Diego Ross of Leaders and the owners of Company Works, Crystal Hutson and Darryl Elliott. They were able to provide a lot of insight involving the business aspect of fashion. I took away so may helpful tips and was motivated to start planning for my own business. Entrepreneurs are often discouraged because there are so many downfalls when taking a leap into the the entrepreneurial world and it is because of panels like this that keep us inspired.
After the panel discussion concluded, guests were able to interact with the street wear exhibits. There was an area were skate culture was represented. It has been said they street wear was inspired by skateboarders in California. This exhibit was full of that true grudge that skateboarders represented. The exhibit called Powerlines was installed to represent sneakers being tossed over power lines to mark gang territory or a tribute to the fallen. There was a mural that represented the Leonardo Da Vinci’s, The Last Supper, but Jesus and his disciples had afros and brown skin. The floor was marked with tape to resemble a basketball court and there were models dressed in exclusive Bulls gear modeling in front of the painting. There was also a live editorial shoot with Her Notoriety. It was pretty cool to see this behind the scenes glimpse of the connection between photographers and models.

In addition to these amazing exhibits there was a screen print workshop that I was able to be a part of. The class was lead by BeeLoย from Chicago Shirt Prints who took the time to explain the process of screen printing. Guests were able to design their own tote as well as purchase other items to design. It was amazing to see the process up close and a provided a lot of understanding for those who are thinking about going into the business.
