Time To Spring Ahead… Again

Be sure to set your clocks ahead one hour on March 9.

Its that time of year again, daylight savings. The days will get longer and the nights shorter. At 2:00AM on March 9th clocks will spring forward one hour.

This practice goes back to 1918. It was originally to conserve energy during World War 1. It was shortly repealed until World War II. Later on daylight savings was finalized by the Uniform Time Act of 1966. This act mandated the start and end for daylight savings. Today, clocks spring forward on the second Sunday of March and fall back on the first Sunday of November.

An article by Times Recorder says supporters of daylight savings argue that it helps reduce energy use, lower crime rates, and prevents traffic accidents since there are more hours of daylight. Others claim that the time change disrupts sleep patterns and affects health negatively.

Not all states practice daylight savings. Hawaii and most of Arizona remain on the same time year round. Some states are considering getting rid of it. These include Alaska, California, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington.

Be sure to get out and enjoy these extra hours of sunshine.
