True Star Alum Kia Smith Pens Third Book

Author Kia Smith, a True Star alum, poses with her latest novel Love Rehab 2 during her recent book signing.

True Star alum Kia Smith recently returned to her hometown of Chicago where she held a book signing event at the True Star headquarters in Bronzeville for her latest novel. Her new release  Love Rehab 2, is the sequel to her 2021 novel Love Rehab. Friends, family, and supporters came to hear the story of the author’s journey, get a behind-the-scenes look at the publishing process, and meet and congregate with the creative mind herself.

Her presence was felt the moment she stepped into the room. As she spoke on her journey as a young writer in Chicago and she discussed how True Star’s journalism program served as an outlet for her to hone her craft and truly trust in her own abilities. “That program gave me a space to explore my ideas and really believe in my writing,” she said during an interview. Since then, she has created a career that revolves around writing, entrepreneurship, and encouraging others to follow their creative dreams.

During the signing, Smith answered questions directly from readers about the book. “I wanted to explore love in all its messy, beautiful forms,” she said when asked what inspired Love Rehab 2. She explained how her characters navigate heartbreak, growth, and self-discovery, while also offering advice to aspiring writers. “It wasn’t always easy, but every setback pushed me to grow and refine my craft. Keep going, even when it feels impossible,” Smith said.

The atmosphere at the event was both celebratory and motivational. Supporters took photos, collected signed copies, and connected with Smith’s story. “Seeing young Black authors believe in themselves is everything to me,” Smith said, emphasizing the importance of representation and mentorship in creative spaces.
