Spring, Creativity & New Beginnings

Looking for a new hobby to take up this spring? Why not try your hand at painting?

As the icy grip of winter begins to loosen, earth enters a season of color, where flowers begin to bloom, the weather breaks into surreal warmth before we’re graced with summer. Spring is the magical interlude between frost and sun-kissed days, it’s more than a season but a promise of renewal, and now it’s officially here.

Spring is not only an excuse for decluttering your space during “spring cleaning” or going to Miami, spring also can look like nurturing your creativity. It is the season of inspiring new beginnings in whatever capacity – whether that be in our own personal lives or even our artistic pursuits.

In this season of rebirth, we plant seeds – both literal and metaphorical. Our personal lives bloom with possibility, and our artistic pursuits find fertile ground. Whether it’s writing poetry or verses, picking up your paintbrush and canvas, the art of dance, or any form of self-expression, spring encourages new beginnings. There are many ways you can nurture your creative garden this spring season, here are a few tips:

Embrace Nature: Take some time to interact with the world outside of social media and immerse yourself in the beauty of the natural world. Become nostalgic and collect twigs, leaves, and flowers as you’d do during childhood. Go on walks, observe and document the small joys of the bird’s song and the whistles of the wind, and create art inspired by the beauty that surrounds you. Nature is a gift that fuels creativity, let it be your muse.

Blossom Through Journaling: Let your thoughts and emotions spill onto paper. Journaling this spring can offer you a therapeutic way to reflect, connect deeply with yourself, and capture the beauty of the changing seasons. Try documenting the delicate balance between the melting snow and budding flowers, the lessons learned, and your discoveries. Cherish the vibrance of spring and watch your creativity bloom.

Paintbrushes & Canvases: Painting is an exciting way to foster creativity, so pick up your paintbrush and allow your creative mind to roam free on your canvas. Allow your canvas to mirror the vibrancy of the spring season, blooming flowers, sun-kissed skies, and spring landscapes await your artistic touch.

The Art of Dance: Spring is a season that invites and eagerly welcomes movement. Whether it’s ballet, traditional west African dance, salsa, or freestyle, allow your body to express the energy of this season by attending a dance class or even just feeling the rhythm and frequencies of music and allowing your body to respond.

Collaborate Among Creatives: As Chicagoans, we know the city is filled with endless opportunities to network and connect with like-minded creative youth. Reach out to your peers to collaborate on projects, idea share, and cross-pollinate creativity. Similar to bees going from flower to flower, you can weave a tapestry of inspiration.

Keep in mind that creativity flourishes when you cultivate and pour into it. As you tend to your creative garden this spring, watch it flourish petal by petal, word by word, stroke by stroke.
